After focusing on offense during the first round, the Falcons went for defense in round two.

The pick: Curtis Lofton, Linebacker, 37th overall

Their impact: Lofton played four years in Atlanta, and was a steady force on defense.

He racked up more than 350 tackles and rarely missed time on the field.

The Falcons likely viewed Lofton as a long-term piece, but he utilized free agency to his advantage.

Lofton ended up leaving Atlanta to sign with NFC South rival New Orleans.

Although Lofton was a solid defender during his four years, the Falcons were left with a huge gap in their defensive front-seven.

Who else was available that round?: The second round of this draft was absolutely stacked.

After the Falcons made their pick, DeSean Jackson, Matt Forte, Calais Campbell, and Martellus Bennett were all selected.

Jackson was a stud for the Eagles and continues to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Forte was the centerpiece of Chicago’s offense and set numerous records during his time there.

Campbell is still racking up sacks and is sitting at 71 for his career.

Bennett recently retired from the league but finished his career with 4,573 yards and 30 touchdowns.

Would they switch the pick?: I feel confident in saying they’d have preferred Campbell or Forte in the long-term.

One of the Falcons biggest issues during Matt Ryan’s first few years was their issue getting sacks.

Campbell would have been a huge piece for their defense and could have helped the team get over the hump.

Forte was one of the best rushing/receiving running backs in the league during his prime as well.

Although Lofton was solid during his four years, he never made the long-term impact achieved by both men above.

If I had to make the choice though, I think the team would have gone with Campbell.
