The Atlanta Braves (20-14) sew up a two game stint in Tampa Bay Wednesday night. Julio Teheran is on the bump and has been blazing hot.

The National League Eastern Division leading Atlanta Braves wrap up a truncated series against the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday night in Tampa, and in doing so, look to get out of town with tiny sweep. If they can get that done, it will be on the back, or arm, rather, of Julio Teheran.

A quick look at Teheran’s line for the season, thus far, isn’t exactly the kind of look that makes you cuss, either way. On the season, he is (2-1) in 37.00 Innings Pitched and carries a 3.65 ERA and WHIP of 1.24. Decent numbers for sure, but not the kind that necessarily stand out.

It is misleading, though.  As they say, numbers can paint a picture, but they don’t tell the whole story.

In Teheran’s first two starts, dude gave up nine earned runs. He only pitched eight innings in those games combined. Basically, he was terrible.

Since then, though, in five starts, spanning 29 innings, Teheran has only given up 6 earned runs, which gives him an impressive 1.86 ERA. Now, those numbers pop.

Some could argue that 14 of those innings, and two starts during that time, came against the Mets. And that would be factually true. My response to that would be: So what?

It is a known fact that Julio Teheran has struggled at STP. There are some teams that give him all kinds of fits (Washington), no matter where they play.

Tampa isn’t one of them, though. In fact, this will be the first time he’s ever faced the Rays in his career. One would think that would bode well for the 27-year-old from Cartagena.

With the effort and results that Mike Soroka and Sean Newcomb have given lately, if Teheran can continue his rounding into form, the Atlanta Braves will start to match on the mound what the others are doing in the field and at the plate.

As mentioned here, these next five games matter. Teheran should get a shot to continue his torrid tear in two of them.
