Revisiting the Atlanta Falcons 2009 NFL Draft
The Falcons focused on defense with their first pick. Was that the right move?
The pick: Peria Jerry, Defensive Tackle, 24th overall
Their impact: Jerry only played in two games his rookie year, and played in 64 during his career.
He moved back and forth as a starter and backup during his time with the team.
Jerry finished his career with 67 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries.
After the 2013 season, Jerry announced his retirement.
Who else was available that round?: Vontae Davis was drafted immediately after Jerry and is a two-time Pro Bowler.
The Packers grabbed Clay Matthews at 26th overall, and he was an absolute star for the team.
He was named to six Pro Bowls, helped the Packers win a Super Bowl, and has amassed 80 career sacks.
Although he has slowed down recently, Matthews had a run as one of the best defenders in the league.
Recently retired center Eric Wood went 27th and was a stud for the Bills offensive line.
After starting 120 games during his career, Wood would have been a great fit for any team’s front-line.
Would they switch the pick?: Of course.
The team would likely draft Matthews, then Davis, then Wood if they had to choose between the three.
Matthews completely changed the Packers defense and his impact was tremendous.
He had more sacks in his rookie year than Jerry had in his entire career.
The Falcons definitely missed the mark on this pick.
