Revisiting the Atlanta Falcons 2009 NFL Draft
The Falcons continued to focus on defense during the second round. Was it smart?
The pick: William Moore, Safety, 55th overall
Their impact: Similar to Thomas DeCoud, Moore was underappreciated and underrated during his career.
Although he was only named to one Pro Bowl, he had several good years in Atlanta.
He stuffed the stat sheet in 2013 with 86 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 7 deflected passes.
Overall he racked up 314 tackles, 14 interceptions, and played in 65 games for the Falcons.
Who else was available that round?: The rest of the second round was filled with solid, but unspectacular players.
Sebastian Vollmer was solid in New England but was never one of the best players on the offensive line.
Sean Smith was still in the NFL last year, but he struggled with coverage lapses and never made the Pro Bowl.
Paul Kruger had two good seasons, but the rest of his career was lackluster.
Would they switch the pick?: This is a tough decision, but I honestly don’t think they would.
Although the three guys mentioned above were solid players, Moore was a great piece for the Falcons secondary.
Matching him with Matthews would also give the Falcons a great set of rookie defenders.
