Revisiting the Atlanta Falcons 2009 NFL Draft
The Falcons decided to continue focusing on defense, going with another piece for the secondary.
The pick: Chris Owens, Cornerback, 90th overall
Their impact: Owens played 4 years in Atlanta, and appeared in 59 games.
He made 12 starts in his four years with the Falcons.
Owens snagged 3 interceptions, over 100 tackles, and one sack.
His four years were unspectacular, but the whole 3rd round was a little underwhelming.
Who else was available that round?: Three solid secondary players went after Owens.
Jerraud Powers went to the Colts and was another above-average player for their defense.
He finished his career with 410 tackles, 13 interceptions, and a pick-six against Matt Ryan.
Rashad Johnson started for seven years in Arizona after going 95th overall and had several good years.
He racked up 101 tackles in 2014 and also snagged four interceptions.
Keenan Lewis started for the Steelers and Saints but never made the same impact as the two other players mentioned above.
Would they switch the pick?: Yes.
Any of the players mentioned above would have had a bigger impact than Owens if their careers played out the same.
Powers is going to be the pick though since we already grabbed Moore in the 2nd round.
With Powers, Moore, and Matthews, our defense is starting to look pretty solid.
