Revisiting the Atlanta Falcons 2009 NFL Draft
Did the Falcons end their 2009 draft on a high note?
The pick: Vance Walker, Defensive Tackle, 210th overall
Their impact: Walker played four years in Atlanta, and made 11 starts with the team.
He racked up more than 75 tackles and had five sacks in his four years.
Who else was available that round?: Since we’re counting undrafted players, a lot.
Arian Foster racked up over 6,000 rushing yards during his career after going undrafted.
His stretch from 2010-2014 was truly magical and he was one of the league’s most dynamic running backs.
The fact Foster went undrafted shows how much of a crapshoot the draft actually is.
Julian Edelman went in the 7th round and has carved out a nice career with the Patriots.
His catch against the Falcons in the Super Bowl will haunt people in Atlanta forever.
Somehow Michael Bennett also went undrafted in this draft.
He’s racked up 54 career sacks, 293 career tackles, and has played in 125 games.
Bennett has been named to three Pro Bowls and is also a Super Bowl champion.
Would they switch the pick?: 100%.
During our 2008 redraft, the Falcons were able to snag Jamaal Charles, so we’ll cross out Arian Foster.
They also got Pierre Garcon and Stevie Johnson, so I feel confident crossing out Edelman too.
That leaves us with Bennett, who will join 2008 draftees Cliff Arvil and Calais Campbell on the defensive line.
