A Reliable Reliever in Hughes

He’s probably not the first Red that you would think of Atlanta trading for, however, Jared Hughes has had himself quite the season so far.

Hughes has been an effective reliever for pretty much his entire career and hasn’t posted an ERA over 3.10 since 2013. This season, Hughes has logged 25 and 2/3 innings, pitching to a 1.40 ERA, with 22 strikeouts. He also has 1 save on the year.

He wouldn’t be ideal in a closer’s role but he could have a big impact on the late innings. He would be a good addition to a team who needs bullpen help.

Hughes does have a year left on his contract, so Cincinnati will be driving the price up. One thing is for certain though, and that is Hughes will cost considerably less than Reds closer Raisel Iglesias. Regardless of how the closer situation ends up, it couldn’t hurt the Braves to add a dependable veteran like Hughes to a bullpen of relatively young arms.
