The Atlanta Falcons locked up their quarterback Matt Ryan with a 5-year $150-million dollar deal. They should go a step further and acquire a backup (Colin Kaepernick perhaps?) capable of starting in a pinch.

Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons have been very fortunate not to deal with many injuries. The roster has stayed mostly healthy and Ryan hasn’t missed a game in a number of years. Still, if an injury were to strike Ryan what would happen?

Matt Schaub is the current occupant of the backup quarterback role in Atlanta. Schaub is no longer capable of being an above-average starter and would struggle to run the Atlanta offense.

It is time for the Falcons to move on from Schaub and look for a backup capable of running their offense. Colin Kaepernick is yet to find a job in the NFL and the Falcons would be a perfect landing spot for Colin.

Forget his politics, whether you agree or disagree with his stance there is no denying he is a better quarterback than Schaub.  Signing him to a deal would be a good move for the team who needs insurance at the quarterback position.

While he lacks Ryan’s arm he is very mobile and would add a new layer to the Falcon’s top offense.

Colin has led a team to a Super Bowl in his career and the Falcons are well aware of how good he is capable of being.

He has a career rating of 88.9 well deserving of at least a reserve role in the NFL. The only downside to this move is the media circus it would ensue when the news broke. Still, the Brotherhood is strong enough to ride out a media circus and it would help the team.

Matt Schaub seems to be a great guy and a good veteran piece but he isn’t a quality backup.  Injuries are something you can never see coming but what you can do is make a plan for them.

Signing Colin Kaepernick would have mixed reviews from Falcon’s fans some of who have supported Colin while others have ridiculed him.  Regardless, take a look at Kaepernick’s stats and ask yourself an interesting question.

If he had faced legal trouble as past Falcons have or any other issue aside from a social one would you sign him?  Looking at the quarterback’s stats and taking personal opinions out of it, the answer becomes blatantly obvious.

Colin Kaepernick as a fallback option would be a great luxury to have. Whether or not it is Colin, the Falcons need to upgrade from Schaub and move on from the veteran.
