The Atlanta Falcons need a backup quarterback who isn’t named Matt Schaub. Schaub is not capable of spot starting effectively the Falcons should ensure the position against potential injuries.

The Atlanta Falcons roster is deep with depth at almost every position. There should be only two big concerns on the team’s current roster. The fact their defensive line is unproven or the fact if an injury were to strike Matt Ryan they lack a reliable backup.

Dating back to his Houston Texan days Matt Schaub has been inconsistent and a B veteran backup. Do you really think that two years of sitting on the Falcon’s bench has made him any better?

For the Falcons it is time to move on from the veteran and look for a more reliable option. Matt Schaub running the Falcon offense wouldn’t be effective.

Consider Schaub at this point in his career attempting to run all the play action and bootleg passes Ryan runs.

It wouldn’t work and the Falcons would fall out of contention quickly. While we are talking worst case scenario already with Ryan being injured it never hurts to prepare for the worst.

Ryan doesn’t have a history of injuries but it would be far more comforting to see a capable backup on the Falcon’s roster.

One who could at least be a good game manager if needed or in a blowout. A running quarterback would be another interesting option for a weapon to put in the wildcat or for the Falcons offensive coordinator to use in some other uncreative way.

Last season’s playcalling was questionable at best. With that in mind, it becomes even more important to have a capable backup who can help steady the offense if needed.
