The Atlanta Falcons have signed safety Ricardo Allen to a three-year $19.5 million dollar extension. A solid move for a team who is trying to keep their core together.

Ricardo Allen is an underrated piece in the Atlanta Falcons defense. He quietly does his job at a high level and has been rewarded for his efforts. As reported by Ian Rapoport who first broke the news of the extension the Falcons have signed Allen longterm.

It is a deal keeping Allen in Atlanta for three more seasons and worth $19.5-million. A solid extension for the Falcons safety.

It is the third player the Falcons have locked up this off-season also offering extensions to Matt Ryan and Jake Matthews.

Giving Julio Jones a raise and talking about Grady Jarret’s coming extension have been stories of the off-season as well.

The Falcons know they have a roster with enough talent to win a Super Bowl. They are focusing on keeping that core together and healthy for the seasons to come.

One big exception to this rule is running back Tevin Coleman who is on an expiring deal and unlikely to remain in Atlanta. Sitting behind Devonta Freeman has its perks but Coleman is a starter who will likely find a job elsewhere in the League.

Aside from Coleman the Falcons now have all their key would be free agents locked up for the time being. Jarrett and Julio Jones will be the next two Falcons in line to receive new deals.

The one concern for the Falcons here will be cap space as key rookie deals start to expire. They have to hope a significant rise in the cap will be to come.

Next. Trae Young to Atlanta. dark

For now, however, signing Allen is a good decision making another player happy and helping extend the Falcon’s window to win a Super Bowl. Falcon’s pre-season action will kick-off Friday when the Falcons take on the Jets in their first pre-season game of the year.
