7 Things You Could See From The Atlanta Hawks in the Near Future
A Rookie Starting Backcourt
Now that Dennis Schröder is backing up Russell Westbrook, there is no reason to not introduce Trae Young to the NBA via trial by fire. Like any rookie, Young will have his ups and downs, however experience is often the best teacher. That being said, I predict Trae Young will start day 1.
The Hawks do have the luxury of having veteran Jeremy Lin to back Young up. Lin should provide wisdom and scoring punch, for the Atlanta Hawks’ 2nd unit. Newly signed Daniel Hamilton, is expected to be the 3rd PG. Jaylen Adams last seen draining 3s for the Hawks in Summer League, is on a 2 way contract, and will see some time at PG as well.
The shooting guard position is the Atlanta Hawks deepest spot. Kent Bazemore, Tyler Dorsey, Kevin Huerter, Justin Anderson, Deandre Bembry, Vince Carter, and Daniel Hamilton all have the ability to play the 2 guard spot. I’m of the opinion that Bazemore will be traded, thus I’m predicting a new starting SG for the Atlanta Hawks.
Tyler Dorsey showed much improvement in Summer League, and is certainly a candidate to start. However I believe his ultra aggressive style is better suited for the 2nd unit. Enter The Red Mamba, Kevin Huerter. The 17th overall pick from Maryland was just recently cleared to resume full basketball activities, after recovering from surgery on a broken hand. This means Kevin will be a full go, for Atlanta Hawks Training Camp.
With his ability to spot up with deep range, as well as make plays for teammates, and himself, Kevin Huerter seems to be the perfect fit as starting SG. He has the skill set to make opposing teams pay for loading up defensively, against a Trae Young/ John Collins pick and roll. I predict Huerter will win the job in the pre-season, even if Kent Bazemore isn’t traded.
