Atlanta Braves Making the Right Decision Extending Tyler Flowers?
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves have extended catcher Tyler Flowers providing some stability to the catcher position. Flowers signed a one-year deal with a second-year option.
Tyler Flowers will be spending another season with the Atlanta Braves after signing an extension. Atlanta signed the Braves to a one-year deal worth $4-million with a second-year option with a $2-million dollar buyout.
Flowers has taken a step back offensively this season but calls a good game and will provide stability in Atlanta.
With Flowers being signed it likely points to Kurt Suzuki heading out of town. Atlanta will target a top catcher this off-season and look for Flowers to move to the backup role.
Signing Flowers is a smart move for Atlanta considering how affordable a contract he was willing to sign. Catchers are a premium in baseball and the Braves have put themselves in a position to sign a starter or a backup.
Keeping Flowers also promises some stability for the Braves young pitchers as well. Letting Kurt Suzuki go will make the Braves offensively weaker at catcher dependent on who they bring back to pair with Flowers.
Targeting this season’s key free agents will be on the top of the team’s priority list. With that in mind, it seems likely they will attempt to land a top catcher letting Suzuki move on.
Flowers has hit .264 with the team, strong production for a catcher who quietly gets hit job done behind the plate. While his arm behind the plate may not be impressive his ability to handle a young pitching staff and call a good game outweighs any concern over his arm.
Overall a good move for Atlanta helping provide stability behind the plate and positional flexibility this off-season.
Atlanta will wrap up a series against the Rays before taking on the Cubs and Pirates in consecutive series.
