Georgia Football: Five Things to Watch vs Middle Tennessee State
Edge Rusher Brenton Cox
Georgia Football dominated South Carolina, however one concern was the lack of a pass rush. I wrote about observing that in this article. Freshman edge rusher Brenton Cox, could be the answer to the pass rushing woes suffered by the Dawgs this far.
Brenton Cox is five-star player out of Stockbridge High School, in Stockbridge, Georgia. He plays defensive end and outside linebacker in the Bulldogs’ defense. The 6’4 245 pound Cox has seen snaps as a backup in each of the first two games, recording one tackle.
Cox has great pedigree, as he was rated the number two strong side defensive end, and number 23 player in the nation, according to 247sports.com He posses the explosion off the edge to be a major factor in the UGA pass rush. He is in the same athletic class, as Leonard Floyd and Lorenzo Carter, Dawgs that now display their talents on Sundays.
Coach Kirby Smart and Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker, have obviously built the Georgia defense to stop the run first and foremost. Stopping the run consistently produces third and long situations for the defense. That’s a scenario that Tucker certainly relishes.
We have already observed that the UGA coverage unit is outstanding. The thing that would make the Georgia Football coverage unit even more devastating, is more pressure from the defensive line. Getting pressure on third and long is paramount.
The ideal scenario, is to be able to consistently pressure and sack the opposing quarterback, without blitzing. The matchup against the Blue Raiders should produce many obvious passing downs, for rushers like Brenton Cox.
A strong showing in pass rushing snaps against MTSU, should certainly lead to increased snaps in the upcoming SEC conference games. This is an opportunity for Brenton Cox to earn those snaps. That is definitely something to watch for this week.
