Jake Fromm is doing a masterful job of running the Georgia Football first team offense. He is firmly entrenched as the Bulldogs’ starter. However with the talented freshman Justin Fields around, that won’t always be the case.

There is no quarterback controversy at Georgia. How can it be? Jake Fromm is doing a tremendous job starting as a true sophomore. He was at the helm of an SEC championship team, and led Georgia Football to their first National Title game appearance in 38 years.

Jake Fromm has been nearly flawless thus far, completing 37 of his 46 pass attempts on the season. That’s an incredible 80.4 completion percentage. He’s also thrown six touchdowns and only one interception thus far.

It is safe to say that Jake is running the UGA offense, just like Kirby Smart wants it ran. The only criticism of Fromm happens when he is slapped with the dreaded game manager tag. The reason for that tag, is that despite his accuracy, he has thrown for only 479 yards. That’s just 159.6 yards per game. In Fromm’s defense, the Dawgs have blown out every opponent, so he has yet to play a full 60 minute game.

Jake Fromm isn’t the only Georgia Football quarterback that is playing well. In fact Bulldog quarterbacks lead the Nation in completion percentage. They have a combined completion percentage of 80.6.

Five star true freshman phenom Justin Fields has played phenomenal as well. He’s completed an even higher percentage of his passes at 82.4 percent. Fields has completed 14 of 17 passes this season for 142 yards, with two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Justin Fields looks fluid as a passer. He’s been able to successfully throw crossing routes, and corner routes. He’s thrown in routes and out routes. Justin also has the arm strength to throw deep down the field. Unlike Fromm, Fields throws to his tight ends often, with Isaac Nauta being a favorite target.

Justin Fields does add one element than Fromm doesn’t posses. It is an element that has been missing from the Georgia Football offense, since DJ Shockley was the starting quarterback. That is the element of being able to move the ball with his legs.

Justin Fields not only possess speed as a runner, he also runs with power. He is able to evade would be tacklers with moves, or run through arm tackles. Fields has even dropped his shoulder, and ran over a couple of opposing defensive backs this season. He is being referred to as Cam (Newton) 2.0 by Georgia fans.

The great thing about Justin Fields, is he isn’t too quick to take off running. He does a good job of going through his progressions, and making the run a part of his reads. He has run for 67 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. That’s a robust 9.6 yards per carry!

I do want to temper the excitement a little, by stating that the two teams Fields got extensive playing time against, were not power five conference opponents. However the fluidity and talent of Fields, pops off of the screen when watching him play.

The fact that Fields didn’t get extensive playing time against South Carolina, the Dawgs only SEC opponent this far, suggests that Kirby Smart doesn’t think Fields is fully ready to compete at the major level. He obviously still has improvements to make, like any freshman does.

Jake Fromm has earned the right to be the quarterback of Georgia Football this season. Unless Jake comes out and lays an egg, or gets injured, I can’t envision a scenario, in which he’s not the starter. I can imagine Justin Fields getting more playing time in the Wild Dawg formation, adding a passing element.

Moving forward, Fromm’s position isn’t etched in stone. Coach Kirby Smart emphasizes earning your spot every day, and believes that competition breeds quality. There will come a time in the near future, maybe even as soon as next year, when Fields can no longer be denied.

Justin Fields is arguably the most highly touted recruit that Georgia Football has ever secured. He’s far too talented to sit on the bench for three seasons.

This quarterback controversy, will eventually be a public spectacle, and a major decision for the Georgia Bulldogs’ coaching staff. Meanwhile let’s sit back, enjoy, and watch this scenario of having two talented five-star quarterbacks, a problem every coach would want, unfold.
