Georgia Football: Five Keys to Georgia Beating Missouri
Use First Down Throws To Keep the Defense Honest
It is no secret that Georgia offensive Coordinator Jim Chaney wants to establish the run, more than anything else on offense. The Bulldogs specialize in wearing opponents down with their mammoth offensive line, so that by the fourth quarter an opponent’s will is usually crushed.
Missouri knows that UGA wants to run the ball, and will likely stack the box on offense, by sending more men than the Dawgs can block on early downs. Ultimately Georgia should be able to wear down Missouri, yet in order to open up the run game, Georgia Football should be prepared mix in some throws on early downs.
Getting blazing fast wide receivers Mecole Hardman and Demetrius Robertson into space on the edges, is a great way to keep the defense honest. It also slows down the pass rush. Look for UGA to incorporate bubble screens, and regular wide receiver screens on early downs.
Play action passes are another weapon the Dawgs should utilize on first down. Especially after they establish some success on the ground. A prime area to take advantage of, will be the void behind the linebackers and in front of the defensive backs.
Wide receivers such as Riley Ridley, Jeremiah Holloman, and Jason Staley, along with tight end Isaac Nauta, are prime candidates to work the middle of the Tigers’ defense. Particularly on play action plays.
Once Georgia Football establishes some level of balance, they should be able to wear down Missouri, and impose their will in the run game late fourth quarter.
Mizzou must be concerned with the plethora running backs such as D’Andre Swift, Elijah Holyfield, Brian Herrien, and James Cook, each with their own style, that UGA with throw at them.
Elijah Holyfield is cementing himself more and more, as the hammer for the UGA offense. He has improved exponentially at running between the tackles, and breaking tackles. He will be key to grinding the clock and keeping Drew Lock off of the field, in this upcoming contest.
