Deandre Baker and the Dawgs Secondary is Terrific

Preseason First Team All American Deandre Baker is cementing his status as a future top ten NFL draft pick, more and more each game. He’s faced two of the top wide receivers in the SEC, and shut down both emphatically!

Baker and the UGA secondary held preseason First Team All SEC receiver Debo Samuel of South Carolina, to just 33 yards on six catches in week two.

Deandre Baker really out did himself in week four, holding Missouri’s leading receiver Emanuel Hall to zero catches! Hall came into the game with 18 catches and 430 yards.

Emanuel Hall burned the Dawgs for two touchdowns last season, so Deandre Baker practically begged the UGA coaches to shadow hall. The coaches listened, and the results were incredibly better, than even they could have expected.

Freshman cornerback Tyson Campbell has gotten better and better each game. He allowed a couple of catches on Saturday, but did a great job at staying in position. There were no blown coverages by Tyson and he didn’t bite on any double moves.

Tyson Campbell showed major improvement from the South Carolina game, in which he was victimized for two touchdowns. He’s has the size coaches dream of at the cornerback position, standing 6’2″ tall. His incredible speed was on display during the 64 yard fumble return touchdown run.

Safeties Richard Lecount and JR Reed, along with star Mark Webb have all been fantastic in coverage, as has freshman linebacker Monty Rice.

Freshman defensive back Eric Stokes had a tremendous day. In addition to blocking a punt and recovering it for a touchdown, Stokes also had three passes defended.

The one complaint about the Bulldogs’ coverage on Saturday, was that they allowed tight Albert Okwuegbunam to grab nine catches for 81 yards. Most of the damage by the Missouri tight end was done after linebacker Monty Rice exited the game with an injury.

Moving forward

The Georgia football team doesn’t need to change anything with its coverage unit. As the young pups get better, the coverage unit should get even stronger. If the improved pass rush we saw Saturday continues, the Georgia Bulldogs should have a top five pass defense in the nation, if not number one.
