Georgia Football vs Vanderbilt Seven Key Observations
Justin Field’s Presence Helps the Run Game
Justin Fields‘ numbers were modest against Vanderbilt. He completed just three of six passes for 53 yards and ran for only 18 yards on four carries. However Fields’ value reaches far beyond the box score.
Opponents have become increasingly aware of Justin Fields‘ ability to make the big play with his legs. Teams recognize that they must stay home on the backside when Fields is in the game.
When the Georgia football team runs the read option, opposing defenders must be absolutely certain that Fields has handed the ball off before crashing down. This is opening up massive lanes for the running backs.
Fields impact on the run game was most apparent on Elijah Holyfield‘s 24 yard touchdown run. The majority of Vandy’s defense followed Field’s as he appeared to have the ball running left. All of a sudden Holyfield came streaking down the right sideline and dove towards the pileon for the td.

Dispite his lack of eye popping numbers, it’s worth noting that for the second straight game, Georgia Football scored points on every drive that Fields played in.
