Penalty Problems

The Georgia football team had an undisciplined day as far as penalties are concerned. They were flagged for an unacceptable nine penalties, giving up 115 yards in penalty yardage. Such an exorbitant amount of penalty yardage certainly drives coach Kirby Smart up the wall.

Late hits and roughing the passer penalties that could easily be avoided, particularly draw the ire of coach Smart. Several of which took place on Saturday.

The yellow flags gave been a problem for the Dawgs all season long. UGA is tied for number 93 of 130 division one programs with 7.4 penalties per game. That ranks 7th in the SEC in penalties per game. Coach Kirby Smart continues to emphasize his team not beating themselves.

When asked if the penalties disrupted the flow coach Smart responded:

"“There’s always a disruption in flow when you get penalties. I mean you get 20 and give up 15. You get ten and give up five. It’s like a constant war with ourselves to overcome things. Which, good football teams don’t beat themselves. We obviously were trying to do all we could to beat ourselves tonight with some, with these stupid undisciplined penalties, which we gotta grow out of.”"

Clearly Smart is correct to have concerns about injuries. Certainly he is right to not want his team to beat itself. The Georgia football coaching staff clearly emphasizes discipline and composure. It’s up to the players to make the adjustments.
