The Atlanta Braves have a very tough decision to make this off-season. Should the team bring back veteran Nick Markakis, or look to upgrade another outfield position?

Nick Markakis had a first half to remember for the Atlanta Braves. He hit .323 over the first half of the season driving in 61-runs and always was seemingly in the right place at the right time. Opening day for Atlanta Markakis set the tone with a walk-off blast helping establish the Braves identity.

Not only was his first-half production important to Atlanta, but his leadership was also invaluable for a young team.  A leader who leads simply by example is a rare commodity that the Braves have found in Nick Markakis.

Still, there is a reason for concern with his second-half slump. After the break, Nick hit only .258 and didn’t appear to be the same hitter in the final two months of the season.

His performance against the Dodgers was equally disappointing in the postseason. He hit .083 getting only a single hit in 12-at-bats. Not a good way to finish what is a free agent year for the veteran right-fielder.

With all of this in mind, the answer is yes, the Braves should bring Markakis back for the right price. With a young roster and all kinds of potential, the Braves need to be very careful which players they choose to invest in.

An upgrade in right-field could come in the way of former division rival Bryce Harper. If Harper were to choose Atlanta Markakis will likely need to find work elsewhere.

If not, it is hard to find a hitter worth investing in who is capable of replacing Markakis. Signing Nick to a two-year deal with an $8-Million dollar salary or less would be a good move for Atlanta. Not overpaying or matching the $11-million dollar salary he earned this season.

Anything higher than eight would be overpaying for a veteran player. Atlanta’s own options in the organization seem far from ready and it is doubtful Adam Duvall or Lane Adams will become starting options.

Chasing Bryce Harper with Nick Markakis as the backup plan is Atlanta’s best move. Bringing back his leadership while still chasing an upgrade could be an option as well if Nick is willing to platoon.
