Atlanta Braves Targeting Patrick Corbin in Free Agency?
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves young roster will be looking to get better this off-season, with plenty of money to spend. One area the team may look to improve is the 2019 rotation.
It isn’t a secret the Atlanta Braves will be looking to improve every part of their team this off-season. The biggest focus should be on the bullpen and starting rotation, where Atlanta seemed to fall short often.
According to a recent rumor, the Braves could be interested in signing veteran Patrick Corbin this off-season. The Braves rotation is full of questions. Julio Teheran finished yet another subpar season with a 3.94 ERA and a penchant for giving up key runs.
Mike Foltynewicz seems to be the lone pitcher the Braves can count on next season. Surprising, consider Folty’s three straight 4+ ERA seasons before his fantastic 2018 campaign.
Signing Corbin could make sense for a team who could use another good starter. Corbin is coming off of a great season striking out 246 hitters and tossing more than 200 innings.
Corbin is twenty-nine and likely has two or three seasons of his prime left. Paying a player coming out of a career season could be a risky proposition, however.
Corbin’s career ERA is 3.91 and has never struck out 200 hitters before this season. Corbin’s delivery could have some concerns as well considering he has been injury prone in years past.
The Braves won’t be Corbin’s only suitor, with young star pitchers rarely hitting the open market Corbin could demand one of the best contracts of the off-season.
For the Braves chasing Corbin would mean they wouldn’t be an option for top hitters Manny Machado or Bryce Harper. Harper would be a great fit in Atlanta.
Nick Markakis is set to hit free agency and the Braves have a power deficiency in their lineup. More to come as the postseason winds to a close and off-season rumors began to swirl.
