DeAndre’ Bembry – Sixth Man

DeAndre’ Bembry also played very well off the bench for the Atlanta Hawks. Foul trouble for Trae Young, Taurean Prince, and Kent Bazemore opened up the opportunity for DeAndre Bembry to play 30 minutes. He responded in a major way.

DeAndre’ Bembry recorded his first career double-double. He scored 11 points, plus he snagged a career and team high 16 rebounds. Bembry also dished out five assists. Versatility was the greatest strength in the game, as he played multiple positions, including point guard.

Coach Lloyd Pierce praised Bembry for his ability to defend multiple positions after the game. Bembry has emerged as the Hawks sixth man, and has logged double figure in points in three consecutive games, for the first time in his career.

The one knock on Bembry playing point guard, was he had a tendency to pick up his dribble too soon. He’ll need to adjust that if he wants Coach Lloyd Pierce to continue using him in that role.

DeAndre’ Bembry stats: 9.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals, 41.2% field goals, 61.5% threes, 41.7% free throws

Other Game Notes

Alex Len was a force inside for the Atlanta Hawks swatting three shots and grabbing seven rebounds. Three of his rebounds were offensive. He also added three assists and seven points.

Vince Carter played 26 minutes and was second on the team in plus/minus with +16. Kent Bazemore was +17. Carter showed his veteran leadership, stepping in to defend Trae Young when Wesley Mathews and other Mavs got in his face, attempting to rattle him.

The Atlanta Hawks continued to shoot well from three-point range making 15 of 38 (39. 5%). They out rebounded the Mavericks 65 to 61. As I previously mentioned, staying at or below 15 turnovers will be a recipe for success for Atlanta. They turned it over exactly 15 times, two less than Dallas.

Attendance for the first game at State Farm Arena was recorded at 16,705 according to ESPN. That’s 89% capacity.

The Atlanta Hawks will take on the Chicago Bulls at home on October 27. The Hawks who are gaining more and more confidence, should be favored to win against the 1-3 Bulls. They will have to contain Zach LaVine who is third in the NBA, averaging 32.3 points per game.
