Atlanta Braves: Bargain Bin Free Agents that Fit With Atlanta
By Kit Anderson
4. Could Former Division Rival Gio Gonzalez be a Fit in Atlanta?
The Braves have plenty of options in their starting rotation. They could attempt to add an ace, or add in veterans hoping their treasure trove of young arms prove themselves ready. If the Braves decide to forgo adding an ace, a pitcher like Gio Gonzalez would make a lot of sense for the Braves.
Gio pitched for the Washington Nationals with mixed success. He has a 3.69 ERA over 11 seasons and would slot into the bottom of the Braves rotation.
Adding Gio would only work if the Braves are confident their young pitchers will continue to develop. If not, the Braves should focus their attention on adding a top of the rotation starter.
Julio Teheran and Gio Gonzalez are similar in their production, two inconsistent veterans capable of great stretches. Gio would be yet another veteran to help Atlanta’s very young pitching staff. He would be a bullpen option as well on the right contract. No question, Atlanta has plenty of options to consider as the off-season finally gets underway.
