J.R. Reed – Safety

Junior Safety J.R. Reed has lived up to his billing as a pre-season All SEC selection. He’s played well and displayed great leadership. If you pay attention to him pre snap he’s always communicating with his teammates in an attempt to get the young Dawgs lined up in the proper position.

More than just leadership, Reed also provides stellar play on the field. He was a Swiss army knife against Kentucky, registering four tackles and providing great run support for the front seven. He was nearly flawless in coverage, and was the major factor in holding Kentucky tight ends to just three catches for 22 yards.

PFF gave J.R. Reed a solid grade of 70.5 for his play against the Wildcats. He gets a Dog Bone from ATL All Day.

Malik Herring – Defensive End

Sophomore defensive end Malik Herring only had one tackle against the Kentucky Wildcats. Stats can be deceiving though, as Herring played very well for the Dawgs.  He was strong in the trenches, often pushing the player attempting to block him into the backfield.

Herring who stands at 6’3 280 pounds did a great job occupying blockers, allowing the linebackers and safeties the opportunity to flow to the ball and make plays. He also did a great job of setting the edge in the run game. He didn’t allow a runner to get the edge and was disciplined on read option plays.

Despite the lack of tangible stats, Pro Football Focus recognized Herring’s contributions, giving him a grade of 70.7. Malik gets a Dog Bone from ATL All Day for his stellar play.

What’s Next?

The Georgia Bulldogs showed their mettle with dominant performance against a quality top ten opponent. An SEC Championship game that will  also serve as a rematch of last year’s National Championship Game, looks large for the Dawgs.

Staying focused will be key for Georgia. They can not afford to look past the remaining opponents on their schedule. Even though the Dawgs spot in the SEC Title Game is solidified, a loss would end their College Football Playoff hopes, so they can not afford to take their feet off the gas, when Auburn rolls into Athens on Saturday night.
