Defensive Dawg of the Day:

Monty Rice – Freshman Linebacker

Monty Rice did his best Roquan Smith impression on Saturday against Auburn. He was all over the field, leading the Dawgs with eight tackles against Auburn’s short passing offense. He also combined with linebacker Tae Crowder to record one tackle for a loss.

Monty Rice is the Georgia Bulldogs leading tackler on the season with 59, one more than safety Richard LeCounte. The sky is the limit for Rice, as his production is ahead of many great Georgia linebackers’ production as a freshman. He gets a Dawg Bone for his work against Auburn.

Mark Webb – Sophomore Defensive Back

Mark Webb a 6’1 sophomore defensive back has seen his playing time increase as the season goes along. Georgia Football coach Kirby Smart decided to play dime defense 53 percent of the time. The use of a sixth defensive back allowed Webb to see 31 snaps.

Webb made the most of his snaps recording six tackles, four solo. He did a great job against the many short passes and wide receiver screens that the Tigers run. Most of the tackles he made came immediately, limiting the opponent’s yards after the catch.

Mark Webb is awarded an ATL All Day Dog bone for his efforts.

D’Andre Walker – Senior Edge Defender

Deandre Walker has been the best pass rusher for the Georgia Bulldogs by a wide margin. His 21 quarterback pressures are by far more than Jonathan Ledbetter‘s ten, which are second on the team. He didn’t get much pressure in the game against Auburn, due to the fact the Tigers get rid of the ball so quickly.

None the less, D’Andre Walker was every effective. He did a phenomenal job and keeping contain on the edge against the tricky Auburn offense. He also had a big tackle for a loss, one of four for the Dawgs. Most importantly he saved a possible touchdown by deflecting a pass.

Auburn running back Ryan Davis was wide open with multiple blockers in from of him on a potential screen pass. D’Andre Walker was screaming around the edge on the way to the quarterback. As Jarrett Stidham delivered the ball to the flat, Walker was able to free his hands, contort his body and deflect the pass to prevent a huge gain, possibly a touchdown.

The pass breakup was one of four the Georgia Bulldogs recorded and was a huge play in the game. For that and his overall play, D’Andre Walker is awarded an ATL All Day Dog Bone.

The Dawgs get a break so to speak, after going 3-1 against four consecutive ranked SEC opponents. The UMass Minutemen visit Athens on Saturday at 4:00 PM EST.

The University of Massachusetts football team, an independent program, comes into the contest with a record of 4-7. This should provide a great opportunity for the younger Dawgs to get more seasoning.
