Atlanta Braves Now Have Their Clubhouse Leader in Brian McCann
By Kit Anderson
Brian McCann is back with the Atlanta Braves where his career began, now as a leader and mentor in the clubhouse. McCann’s value will go beyond his declining production for a team of young stars.
Brian McCann and Chipper Jones were long the face of the Atlanta Braves franchise. Now things have changed and a new crop of “Baby Braves” have taken over Atlanta. Chipper has long retired and McCann has made stops in Houston and New York winning a World Series along the way.
Now McCann is returning to Atlanta a shell of his former offensive self but still just as vital to Atlanta’s success. McCann is coming off of a rough season with only 7-homers and a sub .220 average.
A dismal injury marred season for one of the best offensive catchers over the last decade. Knee injuries have plagued Brian and kept him from putting up his usual numbers.
Now as he heads back to Atlanta, the Braves hope his numbers can bounce back to his best seasons in Atlanta. Regardless of his production McCann has a huge value to the Atlanta roster this season.
McCann not only has the experience of helping lead past Atlanta teams to success but has won on the highest level with Houston.
He will bring that experience and leadership to Atlanta along with a great ability to lead a young pitching staff. Atlanta may have lost some offense with Kurt Suzuki headed to Washington but they gained a more experienced pitch framer.
McCann will be a big help to the Braves treasure trove of young arms. His value goes beyond what the simple numbers tell you.
Bringing him to Atlanta is a move that could help put the Braves over the top in 2019. More to come as the Braves busy off-season continues.
