It seems the Atlanta Braves have faced the same question for the last three off-seasons. Should they trade inconsistent starter Julio Teheran, or stick with him hoping he regains form?

Julio Teheran is one of the most frustrating Atlanta Braves players to watch in recent memory. That is quite a statement considering it wasn’t long ago the Braves were close to a Triple-A roster then this past year’s postseason team.

During that time Teheran was one of the few players the Braves counted on to give them a chance to win every night he went to the mound.

Since the Braves have left Turner Field for the friendlier confines of SunTrust Park Teheran has put together two very ugly seasons.

His ERA has sat at 4.49 and 3.94 the past two seasons with the Braves. His ERA doesn’t tell the full story, however, he often faces first inning troubles giving up a big lead only to shut the team down and look dominant for the rest of the game.

It is a maddening thing to watch, a pitcher who at times has velocity and movement and at others appears to be throwing a softball.

This inconsistency has been a source of frustration for both the Braves and their fans. It has left the team wondering if it is time to part ways with Teheran?

The easy answer is no, trading Teheran now at age 27 would be a bad move for Atlanta. Teheran could still have good seasons ahead of him and the Braves would be selling low on the former All-Star.

Putting Julio at the bottom of their rotation allowing him to attempt to rebuild value is the right move for Atlanta.

Trading an integral part of the team is a pointless move unless Atlanta was to get a better Major League ready player in return. That is a very doubtful scenario considering where Teheran’s value sits at the moment.

Patience in sports may not be the most enjoyable but here it is the right move for a franchise headed in the right direction. Julio Teheran should remain on the Braves roster in 2019.
