Grounded Dirty Bird Defenders in Week 13

De’Vondre Campbell – Outside Linebacker

De’Vondre Campbell is having a down year for the Falcons and that was once again on display Sunday. Campbell was targeted three times in coverage, giving up two catches for 25 yards. Ten of the 25 yards came after the catch. He allowed a quarterback rating of 92.4, and posted a super low coverage grade of 39.9.

Campbell only had four snaps as a pass rusher, but failed to register a pressure, receiving a pass rush grade of just 55.5. On run defense he was often in the wrong gap, scoring a run defense grade of 63.5.

The positive aspect of De’Vondre Campbell’s game was his tackling. He was one of three Atlanta Falcons with six tackles, tied for fourth on the team. Five of his tackles were solo tackles and he did not miss any tackles. His tacking grade was a strong 80.3.

Overall it was a rough game for De’Vondre Campbell. He must begin to play a better of he wants his second NFL contract to be in Atlanta.

Brooks Reed – Defensive End

After showing up on our high flyer list for two weeks in a row, Brooks Reed has now shown up on our grounded list for two consecutive weeks. After turning in the worse performance of his career last week, there was nowhere to go but up for Reed. He went up, but not very far up.

Brooks Reed had just two tackles on the afternoon. The good thing is both were stops. The bad thing is, those two tackles were the only impact Reed had in the contest. He failed to cause a single quarterback pressure in ten pass rush snaps. PFF gave him a pass rush grade of 61.6.

As a run defender Brooks Reed was pushed around at the line of scrimmage. He also allowed quarterback Lamar Jackson to escape outside contain on the edge multiple times. His sub par play earned him a run defense grade of just 51.5. It’s very likely that these next four games will be the end of Brooks Reed’s tenure here in Atlanta.

Jack Crawford – Defensive Tackle

Jack Crawford has played well on most occasions this season, as he’s tied for the team lead in sacks. Week 13 was not one of those occasions.

Crawford had only two tackles against the Ravens. Neither of the tackles counted as a stop. He was pushed around quite a bit at the line of scrimmage by the Baltimore interior linemen. Jack was given a PFF run defense grade of 51.4.

As pass rusher Jack Crawford was able to get two hurries against the Ravens in 21 pass rushing snaps. Unfortunately he was unable to get to the passer at all. PFF graded him 63.8 as a pass rusher. Crawford just did not win at the line of the at nearly the rate he typically does. He will look to bounce back against the Green Bay Packers.

Atl All Day Grade: D

The Atlanta Falcons defense must do something to fix the problems with the run defense. This defense which uses the strong safety in the box nearly every play, is predicated on stopping the run above all else. Starting Deadrin Senat next to Grady Jarrett is one move that should help. Deion Jones continuing to get healthy will also be huge.
