Tevin Coleman – Running Back

Running Back Tevin Coleman has failed to take advantage of the opportunity to prove he is a starting running back in the NFL. Coleman once again failed to produce on the ground, carrying the ball only six times and gaining a measly eight yards.

Not all of the Atlanta Falcons running back woes can be attributed to Tevin Coleman though. As documented, the Atlanta offensive line has declined weekly. Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian often gives up on the run way too soon. He also calls far too many toss sweep plays.

Yet we can’t totally absolve Tevin from criticism. He has lacked vision finding cutback lanes and goes down at first contact far too often. His long run of eight yards in the game, was the only decent run Coleman had against the Ravens.

Tevin Coleman had just six yards after contact in week 13. Pro Football Focus graded him a 64.9 in the run game. It was tough sledding all game for Tevin.

As a receiver Tevin Coleman was targeted just twice, and caught only one pass for three yards. He fumbled the ball after making his only catch. His PFF receiving grade was a microscopic 27.4.

Coleman isn’t known as a good pass blocker, but that was his best quality against Baltimore. He played eight snaps as a pass protector, and did not allow anyone he was matched up against to pressure Matt Ryan.

Tevin Coleman just has not fared as well this season, as the Atlanta Falcons and their fans would have hoped. It will be interesting to see if he’s resigned in the offseason.

Julio Jones – Wide Receiver

Clearly we have entered the sports twilight zone. For the first time, both of the Dirty Birds two best offensive players made our grounded birds list. Julio Jones saw a team high eight targets, yet he only caught two passes for 18 yards. Only three of those yards came after the catch. Just one of his catches went for a first down.

Jet Jones made both of his catches against cornerback Jimmy Smith. The five other defenders that guarded him, held him without a catch. Julio also had a drop in the contest and Matt Ryan had a measly 39.6 quarterback rating when targeting Jones.

It was definitely a bad day for Julio Jones. He and Matt Ryan were not on the same page all afternoon. The terrible showing on the stat sheet, pretty much ended Jones’ quest for the receiving yardage record and a 2000 yard season. Jones is a great candidate to bounce back against Green Bay however. That’s a team Julio has typically torched.
