Atlanta United defeated Portland winning the MLS Cup 2-0 bringing a championship win to Atlanta. A sports town long thought to be cursed finally has another championship to celebrate.

Atlanta United winning the MLS Cup is a big deal for a city that has seen a single professional League team win a championship. The one championship was an Atlanta Braves World Series win in 1995, more than twenty years ago.

Since then Atlanta has given away important wins in every way possible. Choking away big leads or failing to make plays when they need it the most.

For the Atlanta Falcons, it was an infamous loss to the New England Patriots where they choked away a big lead in the Super Bowl.

The Braves and Hawks both made the playoffs for years with nothing but quick exits to show for their efforts.

Atlanta United winning a championship changes the narrative in Atlanta.  A team that captured a city more so than the Falcons or Braves have in many years has finally won it all in front of its home crowd.

Winning a championship in Atlanta is rarified air, something sports fans in Atlanta have to hope will soon change.

Despite the Falcons and Hawks, dismal seasons Arthur Blank’s team has given sports fans something to cheer for.

The championship drought is finally over and with it the sports curse that has plagued Atlanta for over twenty years.

Josef Martinez was the key player in Saturday’s match scoring the first goal and giving Portland constant problems.

With the Falcons and Hawks both looking to be rebuilding projects, it appears Atlanta’s next championship hope would be a repeat from United or the Braves winning a World Series with their young core.

Next. Brantley a Brave?. dark

Regardless, the curse on Atlanta sports is finally over with United proving an Atlanta team is capable of holding onto a lead in a big game.
