The Atlanta Hawks are having yet another terrible season as the rebuild continues in Atlanta. Trae Young has been the focus of the rebuild with his season disappointing some Hawk’s fans so far.
Watching the Atlanta Hawks this season all eyes have been focused squarely on Trae Young. Young is struggling this season shooting under 40% and shooting less than 25% from three-point range.
Despite these struggles, Young is averaging 15-points and 7-assists. Hawk’s fans, however, continue to compare Young to other draft picks and show disappointment in his early struggles.
Trae Young is struggling that is the truth, there is no defending his poor play or denying it. Still, despite his struggles taking a look at the team around Young and his talent, giving up on the rookie point guard would be ridiculous.
Young has shown flashes of his brilliance despite the struggles. When he is shooting the ball with confidence there is little the defense can do to slow him down. As he gets older he will learn to use his quickness to draw fouls in the lane and get to the free throw line.
His shooting will further develop as he learns to pick his spots. The one shortcoming that will likely not improve is his defense.
With his size being an issue Young will never be an elite defender. Young has shown a great ability to pass the basketball as well with elite vision and consistently makes players like Alex Len look good.
Which brings us to the last point Hawk’s fans shouldn’t forget. This Hawk’s roster is very very bad. The team has little offensive talent with Young being the only clear Hawk who can create and get his own shot.
Expecting Young to go out and score consistently when he cannot distribute with confidence is putting far too much on the rookie’s plate. Young is still the Hawks future and will continue to get better as the Hawk’s roster improves and he learns to play at an NBA level in the seasons to come.
