Odds:

The Atlanta Falcons are favored by 9.5 points according to OddsShark. The over / under is set at 44 for the game.

Oddsshark.com is predicting the Atlanta Falcons will defeat the Arizona Cardinals by a score of 25.9 to 16.5. This would mean that even though the Atlanta Falcons would win the game, the Cardinals would cover, and the total would go under.

On the season the Atlanta Falcons have a 3-10 record against the spread. The Arizona Cardinals have a record of 6-6-1 against the spread this season.

Prediction:

On paper the Atlanta Falcons should be a much better team than the Arizona Cardinals. However you know the old saying, styles make fights. Arizona does some things well, that just happen to be weaknesses for the Falcons.

The Cardinals blitz at a higher rate than the Baltimore Ravens, who the Dirty Birds struggled mightily against. Atlanta is missing both starting guards and has a difficult time dealing with a-gap pressure.

Arizona also has cornerback Patrick Peterson, as good a defender that a team could possibly employ against Julio Jones. Quarterbacks have a rating of just 69.0 when targeting the man Peterson is defending. Pro Football Focus grades Patrick as the number eight cornerback in the NFL.

The other factor that plays in the Cardinals favor, is the Atlanta Falcons have a tendency to lose to rookie quarterbacks. That tendency goes back to the Mike Smith regime, but has continued under Dan Quinn.

The Dirty Birds defense uses a single-high safety look, calling cover one man, or cover three zone the majority of the time. This allows rookie quarterbacks to not have to be concerned with disguised coverages. Rookies often know what they are going to see, so it’s just a matter of executing when playing Atlanta.

Between the Atlanta Falcons inability to block or stop the run, plus the fact that the Falcons struggle against rookie quarterbacks, I have a bad feeling about this game. Also the Dirty Birds have seemed listless the last two weeks. Unfortunately I think the losing streak continues.
