The Atlanta Falcons offense was inconsistent in 2018. A frustrating fact, considering how much talent the Falcons boast offensively, and the fact they have a franchise quarterback.

Matt Ryan did absolutely everything he could for the Atlanta Falcons in 2018. If you watched the long and frustrating season, you know this fact to be true. Ryan had a great season despite being used as a punching bag by the opposing defensive fronts.

There was little to no protection for Ryan most of the season, and despite this fact he had one of his best statistical seasons of his career. The problem for the Falcons wasn’t their quarterback or a lack of weapons.

Ryan passed for nearly 5,000-yards and finished the season with 35-touchdown passes to only 7-interceptions. The problem for Ryan was a lack of consistent play calling and little to no protection from a terrible offensive line.

An offensive line that allowed 108 quarterback hits, 6th worst in the NFL. A lack of protection limited big plays down the field and took away the Falcon’s running  game.

This combined with poor play calling left the Falcons with little chance for consistency on offense. With a new offensive play caller and a commitment to improving the offensive line the Falcons must improve in 2019.

Protecting Matt Ryan and establishing a run game must be priorities for the Falcons at the start of the 2019 season. If not, they are in for another long and disappointing season.

Play calling will be another huge change in 2019, the Falcon’s inability to adjust in game during the 2018 season was obvious.

Atlanta’s ability to adjust their offensive attack in game must change. Predictable play calling helped to stifle the offense and led to defense feasting on the poor offensive line without any adjustments.

The Falcons have far too much talent on offense not to be a playoff contender. Next season will afford them the opportunity to prove they are the contender they should be on paper, if not it may be time for major changes in Atlanta.
