The Atlanta Falcons will go into the off-season likely looking for an upgrade to put behind Matt Ryan.  Last year’s backup Matt Schaub is aging and unlikely to help the Falcons if pressed into duty.

The Atlanta Falcons have a need to improve the backup quarterback position. No player on the market would fill this role better than Colin Kaepernick.  Kaepernick has become a polarizing figure for the stance he took against police brutality.

His polarizing story has kept him from being signed despite his talent. For the Falcons they need any upgrade they can sign at the backup position that isn’t a pricey one. Not only is Colin likely the best backup on the market, he will likely sign an inexpensive deal if given opportunity.

Signing Colin isn’t about politics, it is about signing the best player for the job. If Matt Ryan were to go down the Falcons’ season would be over with their current roster. Signing a mobile backup like Kap would afford the Falcons a chance if Ryan were injured.

While it would be a media firestorm for a bit, it makes the roster better and would give the Falcons an upgrade at the position.

Looking at the rest of the market it is clear he would be the best and likely cheapest option. Giving Colin a chance to join the “brotherhood” would be a smart decision both business wise and fit their roster.

Overall it would be a winning move for Atlanta once the media firestorm subsided. The only other viable option would be to draft a quarterback, a doubtful scenario with Atlanta expected to fill other holes in the upcoming draft.

Colin Kaepernick to the Falcons may seem to be a crazy idea, but it is an idea the front office should explore. Giving the backup job to a quarterback who has proven he knows how to win big games.
