Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin was another Atlanta Hawks player that was heavily involved in trade rumors leading up to the trade deadline. Like all of the Hawks major trade pieces, he was not traded. My colleague Kit Anderson with ATL All Day recently suggested that the Hawks should be shopping Jeremy Lin.

The story of Jeremy Lin is an incredible one. Many thought the 30-year-old point guard was done as an effective player, after he suffered a torn patella tendon in the 2017-18 season opener. Instead he has recovered to play 51 games as the Atlanta Hawks reserve point guard, behind star rookie Trae Young.

Jeremy Lin is averaging 10.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest. He is shooting a career high 46.6 percent from the field and 53.5 percent from two point range. His effective field goal percentage of 52.3 and his true shooting percentage of 59.4 are also personal bests for Jeremy.

Lin is also making a career high 84.5 percent of his free throw attempts this season. The negative is he’s only making 33.3 percent of his shots from downtown.

I am not surprised that there wasn’t a major trade market for the services of Jeremy Lin. A major factor that likely scared team from offering fair compensation for Lin, is his injury history. Combine that with his 13.8 million dollar expiring contract and finding a suitable trade partner proved to be a difficult task.

However there was certainly a market for the services of Jeremy Lin in the buyout market. The Atlanta Hawks have agreed to buyout his contract. When the buyout is completed and Lin clears waivers, he will join the Toronto Raptors in time for the stretch run.

Lin is expected to replace the injured Fred Van Fleet as the backup point guard to Kyle Lowery. He joins a team that currently sits second in the Eastern Conference, only one game behind the Milwaukee Bucks.

Parting ways with Jeremy Lin provided financial relief for the Hawks and gives Lin the opportunity to pursue a championship in Toronto. That’s a win for both parties involved. Our Kit Anderson has more on the Atlanta Hawks parting way with Jeremy Lin in this piece.
