2. Trading Matt Kemp’s Poor Defense and High Salary

It wasn’t any secret that Matt Kemp easily had the worst contract on the Braves roster when the Braves new GM took over. Kemp is still an above average hitter but a poor defender and prone to long stretches of struggling at the plate.

Trading Kemp for three more bad contracts and Charlie Culberson was a head-scratching move for some Braves fans. For the front office, it was the simple math of ridding themselves of his contract this season.

Eating bad salaries in 2018 allowing them to have money freed up this past off-season.  The money they have used to sign free agents like Josh Donaldson and Brian McCann so far.  Culberson was another pleasant surprise for Atlanta.

His contributions throughout the season quickly made him a fan favorite and one of the most productive players from the Braves bench. He is the type of player whose stats never seem to do justice to what he brings to the team.

Always seeming to come up with a hit or a clutch play when the team needed it most Culberson was an impactful addition that improved the team both last season and in the season to come.
