Atlanta Braves: Could Another Braves Reunion Result From McCann’s Injury?
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves have had their first key injury of the season with Brian McCann hitting the injured list with a pulled hamstring. Could his injury open the door for another reunion?
If there is one common theme for the Atlanta Braves over the last half-decade it has been bringing back former players. Nearly every member of the “Baby Braves” has come back to Atlanta in some capacity.
Craig Kimbrel rumors have followed the Braves this off-season though they continue to avoid adding a reliever they so badly need.
With their hesitance to add any impact players this off-season it seems doubtful Atlanta will make a move after Brian McCann’s injury. But if the team did opt to add some depth behind Tyler Flowers there is one possibility.
Evan Gattis remains a free agent and could be a good addition to the Atlanta bench. Gattis is a power hitter who would provide the Braves a punchers chance in late-inning situations as well as a backup catcher.
Gattis is a fan favorite player and would offer a power bat at the plate. Beyond that, however, Gattis is limited, he isn’t good defensively at any position and is allergic to walks. Always aggressive and swinging at pitches clearly out of the zone.
Gattis is an intriguing match for Atlanta considering their injury but it is hard to see Atlanta offering Gattis any deal of significance with Matt Joyce on the bench and Brian McCann headed back within a few weeks.
Seeing Gattis rejoin the Braves would be a fun storyline but one that is unlikely to happen considering his shortcomings as a defensive option.
Craig Kimbrel, Evan Gattis, and Dallas Kuechel all still remain free agents as the season is two weeks in. Any of these three players could make a huge contribution to Atlanta’s roster if Atlanta is willing to make a move.
