Atlanta Falcons Made a Big Mistake Resigning Veteran Matt Schaub
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Falcons needed a backup quarterback this off-season, they chose to address the position by re-signing Matt Schaub. A decision that will haunt them if Matt Ryan were to suffer an injury.
The Atlanta Falcons off-season has been an interesting one considering the lack of extensions or impactful additions to what was a terrible defense. One area of need on the offensive side of the ball was the backup quarterback position.
After two seasons of being backed up by Matt Schaub, the Falcons had the chance to improve the position. Instead, they opted to bring back the veteran to back up Ryan.
This is a huge mistake for an offense who had the chance to improve at the position. Schaub would be great in a coaching or advisor role but isn’t capable of starting if an injury were to happen.
Drafting a young quarterback for Ryan to mentor or signing a reclamation project should have been the move for Atlanta. Instead, they have put themselves into a position to where if Ryan were to suffer an injury their season would be lost.
Quarterbacks are currency in the current NFL using a late round draft pick on a quarterback should have been the obvious move. Letting Ryan help a young signal caller develop and either use him to replace Ryan or as trade bait if he were to pan out.
If not what has the team lost, and is there really a worse option in the draft than Matt Schaub? If Atlanta has the opportunity they should still opt to add a quarterback in the draft and provide Ryan a chance to mentor a young quarterback.
Schaub should have been the last resort and instead was the first answer for Atlanta. More to come as the Atlanta Falcon’s off-season continues to lead up to the Draft.
