The combination of charisma, dive and mental fortitude that Michael Jordan possessed, not only made him a legend on the court, it made him an icon off the court as well. He was the most recognizable athlete globally, and one of the most popular and famous celebrities in the world.
I believe that there were only three men during that time frame, who were so recognizable that one could take their photos into a remote village, that did not speak English and the people would instantly know who they were. Those three men were the President of the United States, Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan.
Jordan has been retired for 16 years. Amazingly there are legions of kids that have never seen him play a basketball game live, that stand in line for hours waiting on the re-release of his sneakers. That is the true definition of crossing the boundaries between sports, fashion and hip hop culture.
