Spellman Trade Shows Atlanta Hawks Value Dedicated Players
The Atlanta Hawks surprisingly traded forward Omari Spellman to the Golden State Warriors, just one year after selecting him in the first round. This trade shows the team is seriously dedicated to winning.
The Atlanta Hawks continue their most active offseason under general manager Travis Schlenk. The latest move saw the third of last year’s three first round picks Omari Spellman, finding a new home after just one season in Atlanta.
Atlanta traded Spellman, the final selection in round one of the 2019 NBA Draft, to the Golden State Warriors for Center Damian Jones and a future second round draft choice. The fact that the Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk is formerly of the Warriors organization, makes the two teams natural trade partners.
In his lone season in Atlanta, Omari Spellman averaged 5.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and one assist per game. He played in just 46 games due to injuries, starting 11 contests.
Spellman is a floor spacing big man, who made 34.4 percent of the 128 threes he attempted as a rookie. That is a skill set that is coveted by the Atlanta Hawks, which makes his dismissal somewhat surprising.
