As the Atlanta Hawks season nears they still have a roster spot and Carmelo Anthony remains a free agent. Could the Hawks bring in the disgruntled veteran to help provide another scoring threat?

Carmelo Anthony joining the Atlanta Hawks is an extremely improbable scenario but one the team should at least explore. Carmelo still wants to play basketball and likely has something left in the tank.

At this point in his career Carmelo is likely a 6th or 7th option for most teams. Providing double-digit scoring from the bench and offering a rest for the starters. His defense is a concern but his offensive abilities outweigh the concerns.

For Atlanta, this scenario only works if Vince Carter turns down the Hawks. The Hawks are keeping a spot open for Vince until he reaches a decision.

If the choice were Carmelo or Vince it is an obvious decision for a young team who has vocally made it known they want their leader back. Vince is a great teacher and gives the Hawks solid minutes.

It seems likely he will join either the Hawks or Raptors for his final season in the League. If he opts to join the Raptors only then will Carmelo become a solid option for Atlanta.

Melo works best when he has the ball in his hands, meaning he wouldn’t play well with Trae Young.  He could be used as a point forward of sorts allowing Young a rest when needed.

Anthony would likely accept this or any role offered considering his lack of offers and want to rejoin the NBA.

Anthony is a great scorer who still would give a young Hawks roster a bit of a push and a veteran to rely on off the bench.  If Vince Carter is no longer an option, the Hawks should explore bringing Melo to Atlanta.
