Max Fried Has A Chance To Win More Games Than Any Braves Starter
By Deke Lloyd
With another win last night, Max Fried now has 14 wins on the season. A high for the Braves this season, but now Fried has an opportunity to record more wins than any other Braves starter in the last ten seasons. An impressive feat for a guy who started the season in the bullpen.
Max Fried has a chance to set a high mark for wins in the last ten seasons. Here are the highest win totals for Braves starting pitchers in the last ten seasons:
2009: Javier Vazquez and Derek Lowe-15
2010: Tim Hudson-17
2011: Tim Hudson-16
2012: Tim Hudson-16
2013: Kris Medlen-15
2014: Julio Teheran and Ervin Santana-14
2015: Julio Teheran-11
2016: Mike Foltynewicz-9
2017: Julio Teheran-11
2018: Mike Foltynewicz- 13
As the numbers show us, the Braves have not had a 20 game winner in the last ten seasons. Pitchers winning 20 games for the Braves are far and few between with Russ Ortiz winning 21 in 2003. Max Fried is unlikely to win 20 games this season, however, he could be a 16-18 game winner, a very impressive feat for such a young pitcher.
Some of the credit should be due to Fried for having such a good and consistent season. But getting to 14 wins in August isn’t all just Max Fried. Fried has been fortune this season for the run support he’s getting in his starts, almost 7 runs a game. Compare to that Mike Soroka, a universally all-around better pitcher than Fried, is getting closer to five runs a game. Run support isn’t always the biggest factor, bullpen has something to do with it too, but Fried has been getting the support he’s needed to put himself in position to win these games.
At the moment, Max Fried is sitting at 14 wins. It’s not a promise that he will get 16, 17, or 18. His next two starts will be against the Dodgers and Mets, the Mets being the team he got his 14th win against. With 41 games left in the season, Fried should get 6-8 starts, depending on health and where the Braves are positioned in September. If Fried can pitch .500 baseball he should be able to get to 17-18 wins. If Fried can hit that mark, he will be one of the most accomplished Braves pitchers in the last ten seasons. Not bad for a kid who started the season in the bullpen.
