Georgia Bulldogs Beat Notre Dame in Unconvincing Fashion
By Kit Anderson
The Georgia Bulldogs beat Notre Dame 23-17 in a key prime-time matchup that saw Georgia struggle for the first time this season. Despite the win, there is a lot of cause for concern that this Georgia team can compete with the best.
Notre Dame came out of the gate strong while the Georgia Bulldogs were seemingly lost. Two second-half drives led by Jake From gave the Dawgs a 23-10 lead. That comfortable lead was quickly erased the Dawgs were forced to give the ball back.
With two minutes left Notre Dame had a chance to walk out of Athens with a win. Something a non-conference opponent rarely has a chance to do.
Thanks to a defensive stand (and a non-call on an obvious PI penalty) the Bulldogs escaped with a 23-17 win.
While the win is nice, Georgia has one focus this season beating Alabama. Last night’s team didn’t look like a unit that could go toe-to-toe with Alabama or Clemson for that matter.
Georgia continually shot themselves in the foot on offense and special teams and were often lethargic offensively on Saturday night. While Jake Fromm did nothing to hurt his team he did little to help them either in the first half.
Throwing screens and short-yardage passes that were being stopped with minimal gain. If not for a huge Georgia crowd helping Notre Dame continually make mental mistakes I don’t believe Georgia wins this game.
The Bulldogs won the game on the strength of their crowd and their defense. They have a lot to improve if they hope to match up against the best teams even within their own conference.
Notre Dame is a good team, but not a great one. They had been gashed defensively and unable to put everything together, the fact they came as close to beating the Dawgs as they did points to the fact this team has a long way to go.
