Atlanta Falcons Should Continue to Start Quarterback Matt Schaub
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Falcons have announced quarterback Matt Schaub as their starter when the Falcons take on the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Schaub should continue to start considering how poorly Atlanta has played.
The pounding the Atlanta Falcons have allowed Matt Ryan to take has finally caught up with the franchise quarterback. Ryan will miss a start on Sunday when the Seahawks take on a reeling Atlanta squad.
Ryan suffered an ankle injury late in last week’s game against the Rams. It was a miracle the injury wasn’t worse or he wasn’t hurt sooner when you watch the pounding he took in that game.
Now Matt Schaub has been named the starter when the Falcons take on the Seahawks on Sunday. It is hardly a recipe for success when you consider just how bad Schaub is at this point in his career.
Even with this in mind, the Falcons should name him the starter for the rest of the season. It is a lost year for Atlanta. Even an unlikely win on Sunday wouldn’t rescue what is going to be a terrible year for a talented roster.
It is time for a rebuild and there is no reason to put more wear on Matt Ryan. Ryan is aging and cannot continue to take the beating he has over the last two seasons. Putting another quarterback in (no matter the talent level) is the right move when Atlanta is essentially playing for draft position at this point.
Starting Schaub for the remainder of the season is a crazy move that is unlikely to happen. However, when you consider the possible consequences of putting Matt Ryan back out there it is the right move to make.
Protecting your franchise quarterback and one of the few untouchable pieces on this roster is the move to make. Even if it means watching Matt Schaub for the rest of the season.
