The Atlanta Braves decided not to use their team option on starting pitcher Julio Teheran. Still, Atlanta seems to be keeping the door open to bringing back the veteran pitcher.

Julio Teheran’s time with the Atlanta Braves is likely at its end. Teheran will hit free agency and it seems likely another team will outbid the Braves. Atlanta had a team option on Teheran but opted to let him become a free agent.

While it is understandable to let Teheran go Atlanta is going to have to replace his production. If they can’t re-signing Teheran could quickly become an option.

As frustrated as fans have been at times with Teheran’s production you cannot argue with his numbers. In his career, Teheran has a 3.67 earned run average and has won 77-games. You are not going to easily replace that production.

He may not pile up strikeouts or always be consistent. What he will do, however, is give you everything he has every fifth day and eat innings while keeping his team in games.

With this in mind, Atlanta should keep in touch with Teheran and re-sign the veteran if given opportunity.

The league is quickly slanting towards the hitter, productive pitchers are at a premium. Atlanta’s problem with Julio is the expectation he would turn into an ace.

Teheran isn’t the ace Atlanta fans hoped he would become. But he is a good pitcher who is going to give you a chance to win every 5th day, which is a commodity Atlanta is going to have a hard time finding on the free-agent market.

Bringing back Teheran is highly unlikely, Atlanta is likely to get beaten on what they are willing to pay their former starter.  Letting Teheran leave is understandable but if they don’t replace his production they are going to realize just how valuable Teheran was.
