Atlanta Braves: Should Sign Veteran Catcher Jason Castro
By Kit Anderson
With limited options on the market, the Atlanta Braves should bring in veteran catcher Jason Castro. Castro will be defensively sound and off Atlanta an option other than Tyler Flowers.
The Atlanta Braves need a catcher to platoon with Tyler Flowers and there are very limited options on the free-agent market. Jason Castro seemingly is the best option left though a very limited one offensively.
Castro is a career .231 hitter and would likely give Atlanta very little offensively. However, when you look at the options perhaps he would be the best fit for Atlanta.
Signing Castro for an affordable rate would allow them to focus on adding offense in the outfield and at third base. Castro and Flowers could alternate depending on who is hotter at the plate. Either of them will be 8th place hitters in Atlanta’s current lineup.
Castro has limited power and carries almost all of his value in his abilities behind the plate. Atlanta isn’t going to find a good option at catcher. Barring a surprise trade target, there isn’t a good catcher left on the open market.
Leaving Atlanta’s best option in signing a defensive fit and focusing on adding offense elsewhere. Josh Donaldson remains an option for Atlanta at third base as does adding a fourth outfield option to pair with Nick Markakis.
Though it is hard to guess exactly what Atlanta is going to do. Few saw the quick bullpen rebuild Atlanta put together at the start of the off-season. Rarely does anyone see the Braves moves coming as they tend to keep a tight lid on any moves a rarity in the social media age.
Jason Castro is the Braves best option though there is no doubt Atlanta certainly has very limited options at the catcher position. More to come as the Braves’ busy off-season continues.
