Atlanta Braves Make Odd Decision Moving on From Culberson
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Braves busy off-season continued with a head scratching move this week, letting Charlie Culberson become a free agent. The fan favorite utility man was set to make pennies in a role he has proven he can fill.
Charlie Culberson is set to become a free agent after the Atlanta Braves non-tendered the fan-favorite. The move makes little sense unless the Braves are planning to make drastic moves to improve their bench.
Culberson hit .259 on the season and always seemed to have the flair for the dramatic. When the Braves needed him most he would come up big in the moment.
He has been a great part of this team and was willing to fill any role the team put him in. Aside from being a fan-favorite he was a productive player who was going to be very affordable. This move doesn’t make a lot of sense for a very well run front office.
Considering just how well this front office is ran there has to be a valid reason Atlanta made this move, a reason that we aren’t privy to. Whether it is improving their bench or personnel issues there is a reason Atlanta decided against bringing Culberson back.
Though the move hardly makes sense at first glance this front office should have earned enough trust for fans to know they are making the right moves.
Atlanta will certainly need to add to their bench with Matt Joyce and Charlie Culberson now both free agents. Joyce could be an option to return dependent on Atlanta’s plan for their bench.
After an initial burst of moves Atlanta has remained quiet throughout the last week. Still this team has a lot of moves left to make over the next two months. Moves that are going to put them back in the driver’s seat in the National League East.
