Atlanta Falcons Need to Draft a Quarterback in 2020
By Kit Anderson
The Atlanta Falcons may have their franchise quarterback in Matt Ryan, however, it is never too early to think about the future. It is time for Atlanta to draft a quarterback to learn behind Matt Ryan.
The Atlanta Falcons had to deploy veteran quarterback Matt Schaub this season when Matt Ryan went down. It is time for Atlanta to begin to think about life after Matt Ryan, now is the time for Atlanta to draft a young quarterback.
This class is loaded with quarterback options with names like Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm possibly falling to the second round or later. Even if Matt Ryan ages as well as Tom Brady or Drew Brees he only have three or four great seasons left.
Not to mention the fact that it is far better to have a young quarterback behind Ryan than one who will soon retire. Outside of Nick Foles there are hardly any veterans available who would be capable backup quarterbacks.
Atlanta needs to plan for the future and have a backup plan for the present. One that would only cost the team a second or third round pick. A pick that would be far better used on a quarterback than a depth piece.
If nothing else Atlanta is acquiring a valuable trade chip, a trade chip that could easily replace the pick they spend on any quarterback. Considering the constant need for the position Atlanta has a rare chance to develop a signal caller behind a veteran still in his prime. While it is unlikely to happen it is the move Atlanta needs to make.
If not they will soon find themselves without a backup plan (no pun intended) when Ryan does decide to retire. It is time for Atlanta to make the smart move and draft a quarterback and move on from Matt Schaub.
