The Atlanta Falcons are reportedly yet again bringing back veteran backup Matt Schaub. The move is a frustrating one that makes very little sense for a team seemingly living in the past.

The Atlanta Falcons reportedly bringing back Matt Schaub to back up quarterback Matt Ryan is predictable only because of the fact it is the wrong move.  Schaub is a 38-year old veteran who has had a respectable career.

However, he isn’t a starter at this point or capable of starting for a playoff-caliber team. If that is what Atlanta is striving to be then they cannot continue to be content with mediocrity. Schaub isn’t capable of winning games consistently anymore and has little upside other than his experience.

Reportedly Atlanta will exercise his $2-million dollar option, money that would have been far better spent elsewhere. At this point, Atlanta needs to go in one of two directions. Either pay for a capable backup who can win games, or bring in a young quarterback who can learn under Matt Ryan.

This is yet another move pointing to the Falcon’s malaise when it comes to moving off of unproductive players. We saw this fact with Vic Beasley who was overpaid and continually underperformed, and yet was still given every chance.

Schaub is simply a placeholder taking up cap space, he isn’t going to win this team games or learn from Matt Ryan.   There is always the chance these reports are incorrect, however, that possibility seems highly doubtful.

In a quarterback heavy draft yet again Atlanta seemingly won’t take a shot at adding insurance behind Matt Ryan. It is as if the team doesn’t understand the gravity of the position.  Unlike the New Orleans Saints or Philadelphia Eagles who both recently benefitted from having insurance behind their franchise quarterbacks. An idea that is seemingly foreign for a team that seems to be headed in the wrong direction.
