The Atlanta Falcons have remained mired in quarterback questions for the last half decade and there is little reason to believe that is going to change in the season ahead. Both Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa are dealing with injury issues, a familiar theme for two quarterbacks that haven't done enough to stabilize themselves as long term starting options. It is fair to wonder if the Falcons are going to find themselves in the quarterback market yet again at the end of the 2026 season.
With this in mind, it's fair to look around the league and consider quarterback situations that could create an opportunity for the Falcons to steal a starter. Leading us to look at three franchise options who clearly have a level of questions facing them in the 2026 season.
1. Joe Burrow
The Bengals are a historically cheap organization, but did opt to pay the franchise quarterback along with his star receivers. The issue is the lack of clarity around the offensive line and a defense coming off a terrible 2025 season. Burrow has issues staying healthy due to the punishment he is forced to take in an attempt to give his team a chance to win. It is fair to wonder how tiresome this has become for Burrow and whether or not another failed season could invite change.
It wouldn't be shocking to see Burrow demand a trade if the Bengals miss the playoffs yet again in 2026. Atlanta would love to have the talent of Burrow and take on a contract that offers stability at the position for years to come, it remains unlikely, but is at least worth keeping an eye on amid the current frustrations at the position.
2. Baker Mayfield
Atlanta has to love the fact that Tampa Bay is making headlines in the first week of training camp for opting not to pay its star quarterback. Mayfield is playing out a deal that could make things fall apart between the two sides and allow the signal caller to hit free agency. As much as fans might dislike the division rival, there is no denying his intensity or want to win. Dropping Mayfield on the current Atlanta roster would push the team into NFC South favorites.
Mayfield's level of play and whether or not Tampa is able to salvage the situation is something to keep a close eye on moving forward. If Mayfield were to hit free agency, it is at least a serious conversation for Atlanta's front office.
3. C.J. Stroud
The decline of Stroud is truly unexplainable when you look at the path the quarterback appeared to be on in his rookie season. Things have fallen apart since, with Houston's offense struggling and the singla caller appearing to pick the worst moments to make mistakes. If the Texans had another rough season offensively, it is at least on the board they consider making a change.
Atlanta looking at Stroud as a reclamation project makes sense if given the opportunity and should push the team to keep a close eye on Houston and Stroud throughout the 2026 season.
