There has been no shortage of players and decision-makers to blame for Atlanta's dismal start to the 2025 season. It would be far easier to make a list of those who haven't contributed to the dumpster fire of a season the Braves have had thus far.
Whether it is pitching, hitting, defense, or running the bases, it seems the Braves have found a way to contribute to losing from the top down. With that said, there are obviously some with far more job security than others.
As frustrating as the start has been for Matt Olson, Austin Riley, and Ozzie Albies, there is no shortage of job security for the trio. However, this isn't the case for all of Atlanta's roster, starting with a starter who is already on borrowed time.
1. Bryce Elder
Bryce Elder has a spot in Atlanta's current rotation only because of an injury to Reynaldo Lopez. Atlanta's plans were clear at the start of the season, and they didn't include the 2023 All-Star. Elder's start to his career was promising at a time when Atlanta badly needed surprise contributors. The starter was incredible in the first half of the season before fading badly down the stretch. This led to a 2024 season where it became clear Elder simply wasn't able to adjust.
Whatever hitters have figured out about the righty has resulted in consistent offensive explosions. There is a sliver of hope that Elder is able to make surprise adjustments and find a way to hold onto his roster spot. However, this seems increasingly unlikely, considering it hasn't happened in two years. Bryce Elder isn't likely to turn back the clock, and the Braves need to begin to search for better answers.
Spencer Strider will likely return over the next week, bumping one of Atlanta's current starters out of the rotation. Elder is the most likely option, barring a surprise great start. If Elder wants any chance to stick with the big league club, the righty needs to make a statement in his next start.
